NETeller open for business in US, but not for long

NETeller’s statement said that NETeller “a company registered outside the US, will comply with the act as if it were subject to the Act’s jurisdiction.” However the statement also emphasised the vague spectrum of the UIEGA, saying: “Various provisions of the Act, including the obligations of financial transaction providers such as NETELLER, remain unclear. This uncertainty should be largely resolved when the Secretary of the Treasury and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System issue the regulations they are required to prescribe within 270 days.”

In the meantime NETeller plans to keep servicing American customers and the company confirmed that its customers money was in safe hands.

“The funds of U.S.-resident customers are held in trust accounts and will be available for withdrawal, on demand. The ability to withdraw funds will exist regardless of the customer's location or ability to transfer to any site."

The statement is one of mixed tidings for American customers, for whilst it is comforting to have NETeller operating in the short term, the omens are not good, and the chances are that once the financial authorities review the regulations NETeller will join the swelling ranks of online gambling related businesses to cease US operations.
